Company Enhances Data Discovery Technology and Releases Stand-Alone Data Discovery Solution to Help Customers Take First Step in Comprehensive Data Loss Prevention
Websense, Inc. (NASDAQ: WBSN) today delivered new software designed to help businesses automatically identify and understand where confidential and sensitive data resides throughout their organization.
The new Websense(R) Data Discover software -- based on data discovery technology in the broader Websense data loss prevention suite -- provides organizations of all sizes an easy-to-use and affordable stand-alone data discovery tool without the additional data monitoring and enforcement capabilities of the more comprehensive Websense data loss prevention suite. For many organizations, data discovery is the first step toward comprehensive data loss prevention.
"The volume of data at rest throughout organizations is growing rapidly, and businesses have asked us for an easy-to-use discovery solution to help them accurately search their massive volumes of data to identify and classify where confidential corporate information is stored," said Devin Redmond, senior director of product management, Websense. "After speaking with our customers and prospects, we enhanced the discovery capabilities in our data loss prevention suite and also delivered a stand-alone tool to give customers the freedom to choose a data discovery solution or a more complete data loss prevention suite with coverage and sophisticated workflow for data in motion, at rest and at the endpoint."
According to IDC, the growth of the information protection and control market for data at rest (data that is stored on desktops, laptops, in file/storage servers, USB drives and other types of repositories) is expected to outpace the growth of the market for data in motion (data transferred through messaging traffic such as e-mail) and data in use (data that is used in business documents such as contracts) through 2011(1). The market growth is driven by the increasing volume of data stored throughout organizations and the need for businesses to be able to easily search their data, identify the sensitive information and understand where it resides.
Websense introduced Websense Data Discover to meet the burgeoning need that has emerged as a result of this growth in data. Combining enhanced classification capabilities for the discovery of data at rest with Websense's industry-leading fingerprinting and natural language processing technology, Websense Data Discover accurately identifies data no matter where it is located or what form it takes -- including both structured data (such as social security and credit card numbers) and unstructured data (such as marketing plans or proprietary formulas).
The enhanced data discovery capabilities are also included as part of Websense Data Security Suite version 6.5, which also features new forensic and incident management capabilities as well as an expanded library of more than 450 out-of-the-box policy templates to ease configuration and map data protection to business policies. The set of policy frameworks includes new templates specifically for discovery of data at rest and a new policy wizard that facilitates set-up and speeds deployment. Websense Data Security Suite was previously named Websense Content Protection Suite.
Addison Avenue Federal Credit Union has been using the Websense Data Security Suite to discover, monitor and protect the company's sensitive proprietary information and its members' personal data.
"The Websense Data Security Suite allows us to better serve our members by protecting their personal data, and enables us to secure our valuable company information," said Henry Parker, senior security architect at Addison Avenue Federal Credit Union. "The discovery capabilities and fingerprinting technology provide industry-leading accuracy, automatically searching the content located throughout our organization and identifying where our sensitive data resides, so that we can then apply the right policies to monitor and protect that data. We're pleased that Websense continues to deliver advancements in data loss prevention technology with the new version of Data Security Suite."
"The DLP market has grown rapidly during the past few years and we've seen a significant growth in the demand for data discovery, as some customers seek only the discovery capabilities rather than a full-fledged DLP solution at the beginning of their data loss prevention project," said Richard Wallace, vice president of professional services at Bear Data System, Inc., a Websense platinum partner and Websense Data Security Suite solution provider. "We take pride in providing our customers with industry-leading data protection solutions, so we're pleased to see Websense continuing to deliver technology advancements in data loss prevention portfolio."
