Data loss 'can have immeasurable impact'
The damage a data security breach can inflict on a business has been highlighted by technology publication TMC.net.
Recent high profile incidents, including the loss of CDs containing the personal details of 25 million Brits claiming child benefit by HM Revenue and Customs, have underscored the impact data loss can have on public sector organisations but commercial businesses can also face substantial harm.
TMC.net pointed out: "Recovering from data loss can have an immeasurable impact on an organisation's reputation, business operations, and ultimately, its bottom line.
"Compliance with regulatory requirements is of growing importance, as failure to comply may result in financial and legal liabilities, lost business, and a decline in customer confidence."
The publication explained that firms can take steps to minimise the risk that an employee may inadvertently lose data by ensuring that every staff member is made aware of the company's security policy.
It suggested that in for firms to keep data safe, staff at "every level from the top down" need to understand the risks their organisation faces and the "policies and technologies implemented to help mitigate those risks".
Workers should also be made aware of their responsibility to protect company assets, it added.
